The tropical symmetric bias
Speaker: Ofer Shamir, Courant, NYU
Location: Warren Weaver Hall 1302
Date: Wednesday, November 24, 2021, 3:30 p.m.
Synopsis:
A yet unexplained feature of the tropical wavenumber-frequency spectrum is its parity distributions, i.e., the power distribution between its (meridionally) symmetric and antisymmetric components. Satellite observations and reanalysis data provide ample evidence of a ubiquitous symmetric bias in the tropical spectrum, evident across different dynamical variables, different pressure levels, different seasons, and within the wavenumber-frequency plane. The purpose of this talk is to present the problem and relevant observations/data, discuss possible explanations, present recent advances by the authors, and reach out to the community for help in understanding this bias.
