Convection, Jets and Atmospheric Circulation in an Idealized Aquaplanet Model
Speaker: Penelope Maher, University of Exeter

Date: Monday, October 31, 2016, 3:30 p.m.
Synopsis:
There are a number of known mean-state biases in fully coupled climate models. In this seminar I will focus on one such bias in the mid-latitude near-surface eddy-driven jet that is located too close to the equator compared to the observations. I will present preliminary results investigating the sensitivity of the eddy-driven jet position to parameterised convection within the context of an idealised aquaplanet model with full radiation, the Model of an idealized Moist Atmosphere (MiMA). Results suggest that the convection scheme does not change the qualitative nature of the circulation but has potentially important impacts on certain biases that could assist in improving climatology of fully coupled global climate models.
Notes:
This is a special AOS seminar.
