Numerics for Wave-Vortex interactions

Speaker: Cai Maitland-Davies, CAOS

Location: Warren Weaver Hall 1314

Notes:

Gravity waves in the ocean and atmosphere contribute significantly to vertical mixing and momentum transport, so is it important to parameterize their effects accurately using wave-mean interaction theory. In some circumstances, Generalized Lagrangian-mean theory offers advantages for this task, because of its better treatment of material invariants, which are usually lost under an Eulerian-mean approach. In my talk I will illustrate these theoretical issues in a shallow water setting, and discuss the numerical challenges that are encountered in a simple model of two-way wave-vortex interactions.
