Atmosphere Ocean Science Friday Seminar

Vertical fluxes conditioned on vorticity and strain reveal submesoscale ventilation

Speaker: Qiyu Xiao, CAOS

Notes:

Submesoscale flow (ageostrophic currents with spatial scale ~ 10km or smaller) are thought to be important but its effect on passive tracer transport is still unclear. In this seminar, I will talk about some properties of surface strain and vorticity joint distribution and how conditioning vertical fluxes on these provides us an angle to understand passive tracer transport in a submesoscale-permitting idealized simulation.
