Atmosphere Ocean Science Friday Seminar

Scaling in a Quasigeostrophic System with Latent Heat Release

Speaker: Marguerite Brown, CAOS

Location: Online

Date: Friday, December 4, 2020, 4 p.m.

Notes:

Moisture accounts for about half of the available energy generating atmospheric motion, but many questions remain in how the hydrological cycle interacts with turbulent dynamics. As the planet warms and the atmospheric water content increases, understanding the interplay between the moisture and midlatitude storm systems will become vital for weather modeling. In this talk, I will discuss some of the concepts involved in incorporating the effects of moisture into quasigeostrophic turbulence and explore how some of the scaling arguments of dry turbulence change in a saturated atmosphere.
