Atmosphere Ocean Science Friday Seminar

Undoing the Average: from low-resolution CubeSat data to high-resolution heat map

Speaker: Nolan Reilly, CAOS

Location: Warren Weaver Hall 1314

Date: Friday, April 1, 2022, 4 p.m.

Notes:

This is research my sister Sonia and I mostly did in undergrad about retrieving spatial information about the Earth's outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) field using CubeSats. The RAVAN mission was a prototype CubeSat with a single-pixel radiometer, intended to demonstrate the utility of CubeSats in measuring the Earth Radiation Imbalance as an alternative to very expensive full-scale satellites with high-resolution cameras. Our goal was to use this data with no inherent spatial information to reconstruct as detailed a map of OLR as possible, with as few CubeSats as possible.

I will be talking this Friday at 4pm in WWH1314 about the methods that we used to solve this problem, the results that we obtained, and the mistakes, caveats, and potential improvements available from hindsight.
