Atmosphere Ocean Science Friday Seminar

Lee waves in an infinite channel

Speaker: Cai Maitland-Davies, CAOS

Location: Warren Weaver Hall 1314

Synopsis:

Lee waves are steady internal gravity waves generated by flow over topography. Typical theoretical studies of them, and their associated mean flow response, use a periodic domain with a zonal averaging operator, which is not well suited to the oceanic setting where they can reflect down off the ocean surface and travel far downstream of their generation site. I will talk about how to model lee waves in an infinite horizontal domain, and some difficulties that come with doing this.
