Atmosphere Ocean Science Friday Seminar

Basics of Vortex Ring

Speaker: Tyler Greiner

Location: Warren Weaver Hall 1314

Date: Friday, March 29, 2024, 4 p.m.

Synopsis:

Vortex ring problem has been a long adored problem by physicists and mathematicians alike. Ranging from the first mathematical paper by Helmholtz in 1855, to the grandiose (but doomed) “Vortex Theory of the Atom” pioneered by Lord Kelvin and JJ Thompson. In this talk we will discuss the properties of vortex rings, as well as cover simple solutions to steady state swirl-less rings. This will be ended with a brief discussion of vortex rings in a rotating frame.
