How (not) to ray trace
Speaker: Dave Connelly
Location: Warren Weaver Hall 1314
Date: Friday, September 13, 2024, 4 p.m.
Synopsis:
Ray tracing is an attractive framework within which to develop gravity wave parameterizations. However, configuring a ray tracing code to be both accurate and efficient involves a slew of modeling decisions that often lack obvious answers. It is, of course, much easier to find setups that don’t work. In my talk, I will discuss a number of ways in which, over the last few months, I have been perplexed and outmaneuvered by nothing more than a stubborn system of ODEs. Then, if my luck holds, I will present a few insights into how a particular ray tracing parameterization might be accelerated, and how machine learning might be able to help.
