Annular Modes in the Tropical Atmosphere

Synopsis:

The extratropical annular modes—zonally coherent fluctuations of geopotential height—have received much attention for their dynamical and predictive utility. However, little attention has been paid to the corresponding phenomenon at low latitudes. I will discuss our recent work on tropical annularity, focusing on its downward-propagating signal, relation to existing modes of variability, and far-field impact. A number of additional results constrain, but do not fully explain, the underlying mechanism.
