Atmosphere Ocean Science Friday Seminar

Submesoscale filament and cyclone anticyclone asymmetry

Speaker: Qiyu Xiao, PhD Student, Courant Institute

Location: Warren Weaver Hall 1314

Date: Friday, December 7, 2018, 3:45 p.m.

Synopsis:

In submesoscale currents, there are more and stronger cold filaments thanthe warm ones. Empirically this is related to the similar asymmetry betweencyclone anticyclone. I will introduce the derivation of a balance model(QG+1 model from Muraki et al. 1998) which can produce such type ofasymmetry and present simulation results of this model.
