Tracer Transport Benchmark for Atmospheric GCMs

Synopsis:

Recent studies have highlighted the importance of accurate transport for reliable ozone recovery projections in climate models. In this talk, a proposed benchmark test to assess stratospheric tracer transport in climate models will be presented. The test reveals large differences in transport across different idealized models. These differences can be largely traced back to differences in resolved tropical stratospheric winds that module the tropical stratospheric circulation and influence the mixing between the tropical and the extratropical stratosphere.
